Upgrade your tech game

Upgrade your tech gameUpgrade your tech gameIts a good idea to update your tech on a regular - though preferably non-obsessive - basis. Heres why.Using outdated tech can mean that you potentially work slower or less efficiently, have more limited access to newer apps or have to delete necessary files to keep up with normal work flow. Using an old phone might make your boss think youre out of touch, or uninterested in moving forward. Not always, but if you work in a tech or trend conscious industry, you probably should start thinking of your next big tech investment. Here are some ideas of tech toys and tools that will help you work or improve your work/life balance. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but rather a starting point. In no particular orderAn evolved smartphoneSince the iPhone isnt the only way to go, a great way to decide on new phone would be to consider your specific needs or current trends. Ive tested out some of the newest launches and these are two of my top picksWe all have a Blackberry lover in our lives (stares meaningfully at my relative who shall remain nameless) who insists on staying loyal to the brand because of whats said to be a more secure network and an actual keyboard. With the new retro trend in phones, the Blackberry KEYone honors its business intensive past, while still providing a marvel of both konzept and function. It runs on Android, so theres no need for a separate plan or network. The KEYone also has a powerhouse, all day battery, both a physical keyboard and touch screen functionality, and a gorgeous, sleek look that wont make users seem out of touch. If creating video has become a large part of your personal or professional life, a phone that allows you to shoot, edit and share should be part of your toolbox. The LG V30 dazzles with its video and photo capabilities. The camera has an F/1.6 glass lens which allows for more light to seep into each shot, so low-light is less of an issue and colors really pop. There a re also 16 video presets which means that instead of using a filter that can distort your work, quality is preserved. Theres also a nifty zoom feature which zeroes in anywhere in the frame, something I havent seen often in smartphones.A more sophisticated laptopIts entirely possible that youll stick with your workhorse computer for another five years, but if you look at some of the new offerings, youll notice upgrades include everything from a speedier experience, to a more comfortable keyboard and overall usage experience. Ive been testing out the Microsoft Surface Pro laptop for a few months now and its fast become my go-to computer for on-the-go/presentations and any place I need a mobile (stylish) workstation. One thing to note though, it can blip out when you put it to sleep, so dont panic if you think youre facing the black screen of (computer) death either shut if off after each use, or press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time for at least 15 seconds and then release both and youll be back in business.Affordable VRWhat if I told you that the newest and best VR option was also incredibly affordable? Google Daydream View isnt awkwardly heavy, so you wont be so distracted by the weight that you lose track of the coolness of ostensibly experiencing what youre only seeing. Its designed so that glasses wearers can find a comfortable fit and is dummy proof - even for absolute beginners.Clean up your actWhat once may have seemed like an excessive luxury, can now be a tool to save you time and stress. The LG Hom-Bot Turbo+ is one of the most beautifully designed robot vacuums out there, its also one of the priciest, but it does have numerous features and extras. There are several cleaning directions available along with a spot cleaning function. It also remembers your last 20 cleans, so youll know if youve missed anything. Theres also an app, so if you want, you can set the vac to clean up while youre still at work. Theres also a mobile security camera, so you can keep an eye on Fido or the nanny.Meanwhile, at the other end of the spendy spectrum, Monoprice has an excellent contender Strata Home Smartvac 2.0 on the market that costs a fraction of the price. There are fewer bells and whistles, and the voice reminders are decidedly robotic, but its a great way to treat yourself without breaking the bank.Better than a screenInstead of buying a smart TV, consider an investment in a smarter visual presentation and entertainment experience.Epson Home Cinema 1060 1080p 3LCD Projector is fairly portable and extremely easy to connect, set up and use. Use it at home and you have more of a movie theater experience with images that seem more clear and brighter. Connect Blu-Ray, gaming, streaming and pretty much anything else that provides at-home entertainment, but you can also use it for your next meeting. So instead of painfully struggling to set up your laptop and PowerPoint setup, you can create a better experience . Bonus - the speakers are built in, so sound wont lag, but if youre screening a movie, you might want to set up your own sound system.A newer kid on the block is PIQS Projector by Butterfly Technology which has a smaller footprint and is easier to travel with. Connect with your mobile phone or tabletcomputer while making a presentation.Shine some lightWorking long hours means you can sometimes come home to a pitch-black apartment. Im not quite sure how I lived before setting up my Philips Hue Smarter Lighting which can also act as a dimmer and mood setter. Also notable are Lutrons Caseta Wireless and Hive home smarter lighting packages which also let you control the A/C and monitor your doors and windows for movement while youre out burning the midnight oil.Almost Instant GratificationWhile its not technically a tech toy, the newest generation of Instant Pot can be operated via app and Wi-Fi. This 6-quart version of the cult speedy pressure cooker and six in one cooker (It makes y ogurt And rice Even chili) allows you to become part of the national Instant Pot obsession, eat smarter and healthier, and set things from your phone - so you can walk in to a hot and healthy meal.

Pregnancy and Employment Questions and Answers

Pregnancy and Employment Questions and AnswersPregnancy and Employment Questions and AnswersIf you have a baby on the way, youll need to know about interviewing while pregnant, when to tell your employer youre having a baby, pregnancy and disability law, and the best ways to handle pregnancy and employment. Make sure you know what your rights are as a pregnant worker, and review the federal and state laws, as well as your companys policy regarding pregnancy and family leave. Pregnancy Discrimination Guidelines from the EEOC The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has recently updated and amended the enforcement guidelines for pregnancy discrimination. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) of 1978 provides that women affected by pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions must be treated the same way as other individuals with temporary disabilities. Therefore, a pregnant woman canleid be treated differently from any other employee with any other disability. Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) Requirements According to the EEOC Fact Sheet for Small Businesses 1. An employer may not discriminate against an employee on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions and 2. Women affected by pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions must be treated the same as other persons not so affected but similar in their ability or inability to work. In addition, Title VII, as amended by the PDA, prohibits discrimination based on the following Current PregnancyPast PregnancyPotential or Intended PregnancyMedical Conditions Related to Pregnancy or Childbirth The PDA covers all aspects of employment, including firing, hiring, promotions, and fringe benefits (such as leave and health insurance benefits). Pregnant workers are protected from discrimination based on current pregnancy, past pregnancy, and kompetenz pregnancy as defined below Current pregnancy. Under the PDA, an employer cannot fire, refuse to hire, demote, or t ake any other adverse action against a woman if pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition was a motivating factor in the adverse employment action. This is true even if the employer believes it is acting in the employees best interest.Past Pregnancy. An employer may not discriminate against an employee or applicant based on a past pregnancy or pregnancy-related medical condition or childbirth. For example, an employer may not fire a woman because of pregnancy during or at the end of her maternity leave. Potential Pregnancy. An employer may not discriminate based on an employees intention or potential to become pregnant. For example, an employer may not exclude a woman from a job involving processing certain chemicals out of concern that exposure would be harmful to a fetus if the employee became pregnant.Concerns about risks to a pregnant employee or her fetus will rarely, if ever, justify sex-specific job restrictions for a woman of childbearing capacity.Medical Conditi on Related to Pregnancy or Childbirth. An employer may not discriminate against an employee because of a medical condition related to pregnancy and must treat the employee the same as others who are similar in their ability or inability to work but are not affected by pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. Pregnancy and Employment FAQs Q. Do I have to tell the interviewer that Im pregnant? A. No, you dont have to tell them. The fact that you are pregnant isnt relevant to whether or not you are the right person for the job. You might want to interview as usual and get the interviewer interested in your qualifications prior to mentioning your pregnancy. Then consider discussing your pregnancy during the negotiation phase of the interview process. Why bring it up if you dont have to? Because the employer will know in the near future anyway and you dont want them to feel like they were misled. Either way, its a personal decision and you need to decide, based on the circumstances, when would be the best time to disclose your condition. Q. When should I tell my employer that Im pregnant? A. The best time to tell your employer is when you need to, and when the time is right for you. It could be when youre starting to show, or when you need time off for the doctor. You may choose to wait until your employer needs to make accommodations for your pregnancy, or you need to take disability leave. Personally, Im in favor of being open with your employer. I told my boss as soon as my pregnancy was confirmed and I had only been working at the company for a couple of months. For me, it was easier to plan doctor visits and a maternity leave without stressing over it because I didnt want to mention the pregnancy. On the other hand, I know people who have waited for months and that worked out fine too. From the other side of the desk, I supervised a person who didnt tell us she was pregnant. She took lots of time off from work, was very ill with mornin g sickness and because we had no clue what was happening, we were afraid she was deathly ill.We would have been much happier knowing she was pregnant Q. What maternity benefits am I entitled to? A. The Family and Medical Leave Act provides up to twelve weeks leave during a calendar year or your companys fiscal year. However, your employer is not mandated to pay your salary. They are mandated to give you the same job or a job with equal pay and benefits when you come back to work. You may be entitled to disability pay, but, it will probably be less than your normal paycheck. Check with your employer to determine what additional benefits, if any, you may be entitled to. Also check on health insurance coverage for yourself and your baby. Q. When do I have to go back to work? A. That depends. Check with your employer to find out what maternity leave benefits they provide. You are entitled to at least the twelve weeks provided by the Family and Medical Leave Act. Your employer ma y have mora generous benefits, and may be open to making accommodations for your return. Inquire about the possibility of coming back part-time at first, or even job sharing if you dont feel able to commit to working full-time. Q. Can I collect unemployment if Im pregnant? A. Yes, you can collect unemployment when youre pregnant. Your pregnancy should not impact your eligibility for unemployment compensation. In fact, it is a violation of federal and state law to deny a claimant eligibility for unemployment on account of pregnancy. Heres information on eligibility for unemployment when you are pregnant. Q. Ive been discriminated against. What do I do? A. You can file a claim with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission(EEOC). Contact the nearest EEOC office to inquire about filing charges in person, by mail or by telephone. If there is not an EEOC office in the immediate area, call toll free 800-669-4000. 7 jobs that pay you to travel the world

7 jobs that pay you to travel the world7 jobs that pay you to travel the worldMany people say they love traveling but struggle in finding a sustainable way to do it. Due to those demanding 9-5 job commitments, they may only get the chance to travel on a foreign holiday once or twice a year then its likely time sensitive, dictated by factors like annual leave or affordability. You need money to do all you might want to do, after all. But what if there were ways to travel while earning at the same time?Well, there are, and some are more unique than you might think. Here are 7 jobs that will pay you to travel the world1. Work on a Cruise ShipCruises are genuinely regarded as a time of rest and recuperation therefore they may not come immediately to mind as a place youd like to work. However, a cruise is also a vessel to every continent of the world (even Antarctica is becoming an increasingly popular choice among travellers). Furthermore, the options for work are vast. Whether your stre ngths are in retail, cooking, hosting, dancing, as a waiter or bartender, there is a sortiment of opportunities on board a cruise ship, not least of which is the chance to travel the worlds oceans.2. Become a Tour GuideIf youre passionate about working on the ground and enjoy learning about other cultures,a tour guide positionmay be perfect for you. Of course, wherever you choose, a minimum requirement for this would be that you could actually see yourself living there for a decent period of time. For that reason its recommended that you only consider tour guiding after already living in a certain place for a little while not only will this help you decide whether you like it but youll pick up key facts and knowledge about the location along the way. Being a quick learner and good at public speaking are also great attributes for a successful tour guide to have.3. BartendingIf youre preparing for tour guiding or another long-term travel goal but need something to help you get by in t he meantime, serving drinks in a bar is as good an option as any. You get to share stories with the locals and may even pick up some of their quirky mannerisms along the way. This is the kind of job you can find almost anywhere, even in smaller towns, and one that you dont need any qualifications for. Obviously, youll need to be good with people, though if youre passionate about travelling you probably love meeting new people anyway.4. Truck DrivingNot everyone is a people person of course you may be more of an introvert, cut out for a job that involves long periods working alone. In that case driving a truck cross country might be ideal. This is another in-demand role that youll be able to pick up anywhere providing you have the correct driving license requirements. Truck driving to some will seem dull but it is a seriously great way to enjoy the environment of any country its only through driving long-distance that you truly appreciate the scale of the land youre travelling.5. Cha rity WorkIf you care about people and countries that are less well off, there are numerous charities that will offer you the opportunity to travel in exchange for hands-on work on the ground. Obviously, this is a somewhat less glamorous option that probably wont pay as well as you might like, but the important thing is that youd be doing something you care about, seeing the world and helping others along the way. Many people find that charity work gives them experiences theyll remember for a lifetime.6. Teach English as a Foreign LanguageAnother way you can feel like youre doing something to help others is becoming a TEFL teacher. This is a highly in-demand role due to English being such a popular global language. Its not a difficult role to get into either. You dont necessarily need to know the local language in most cases, though picking up a few words alongside a little cultural knowledge is nonetheless always helpful. You will need a TEFL certification, but there are plenty ofTE FL training programs you can take you can take without too much trouble. Plus, there are few jobs more rewarding in general than teaching.7. Travel BloggingQuite literally one of the jobs you can do traveling is travel blogging. To start making proper money from this youll need a decent amount of followers and social media knowledge to promote your material, as well as some writing skill, an eye for photography if you want to have more of a photo-based blog, or video production skills if youd prefer video blogging. Even if this doesnt turn out to be financially viable long-term, it could still bea great hobby that helps document your travel experiences to look back on later. These are just some ideas for jobs that will pay you to travel the world, but there are endless possibilities out there for those wanting to craft their own experiences. Use these as your catalyst to discover your own unique path across the world. This article was originally published on YourCoffeeBreak.

New Technology for Noise Control

New Technology for Noise Control New Technology for Noise Control Dr. Rick Scholte, founder of Sorama, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, was out to make some noiseby ridding machines of it. A researcher in the mechanical engineering department at the Eindhoven University of Technology, hes devoted years to analyzing the sound of products, culminating with the creation of the sound camera. It started with visualizing sound and vibrations and the first version had only two microphones, one was acting as a reference center and the other was a robotic system that could scan the microphone, he says. The measurements just werent enough to make a difference. The time taken was too long based on the number of images or scans we were getting, he remembers. It was clear we needed many more microphones but the channel price was very high. It would be a few million dollars for that same level microphone. We started using the ones for hearing aids with analog and MEMS microphones that are used in phones. Now it was a price that was much better. Issues with noise and sound are often overlooked in the whole design process and its usually only a few weeks before the product goes into production that inventors realize the problem, Scholte says. But it goes beyond annoyance. There was research reported by the HWO about noise pollution that found one million healthy life years were lost because of traffic noise pollution, he says. It can even cause heart disease. Its the number two health risk in Europe and may be number one by 2020. Explaining how the sound camera is put into action he compared it to those used to assess energy leaks in houses. Were trying to find where the weakness is, he says. The successful version of the camera pointed 1,024 microphones at the product and visualized and measured the sound pressure. It pinpointed where the source of the noise is located and how it behaves over time, he says. An example of the cameras success was with a heating system by Remeha. It contained a beeping which Scholte says was one of the loudest for that market. Originally, the company spentsix to sevenmonths with their team doing trial and error and werent able to change much. We came in and, with the camera, we analyzed images and saw aroundfour to fivedifferent sources causing the noise, one of them in the boiling system. We managed to get the noise level down more than 80 percent intwo to threedays and it became one of the quietest on the market. Another example was solving a beeping noise in a mobile phone, to the tune of 13 khz in your ear. There it was just one problem to be adjusted and the beeping was gone, he says. Sometimes the answer can be very simple but you have to find the source of the issue. Scholtes goal is to improve the health of the consumer and also change the mindset of products. Sound is the last thing they think of when they create something. It should always be one of the first things. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Sound is the last thing they think of when they create something. It should always be one of the first things.Dr. Rick Scholte, founder, Sorama

5 Ways to Improve Your LinkedIn Profile in Less Than an Hour

5 Ways to Improve Your LinkedIn Profile â€" in Less Than an Hour 5 Ways to Improve Your LinkedIn Profile â€" in Less Than an Hour If you’re still on the fence about LinkedIn, it’s time to jump off. A 2013 social recruiting survey by  Jobvite  concluded that LinkedIn is recruiters' top social network of choice for hiring. Recruiters use it to search for and contact candidates, keep tabs on potential candidates and vet applicants prior to an interview. Your LinkedIn profile is just as important as your résumé. However, they are not the same thing and should be treated differently. There will be some crossover between the two, but your LinkedIn profile gives you the opportunity to create a more substantial version of your résumé. You can include elements in your profile that you cannot fit or easily include in a standard Word or PDF résumé. Are you convinced yet that you need to build or update your LinkedIn profile? Here are five major fixes that will distinguish your profile from your résumé  â€"  and  take you less than one hour to make. 1. Picture.  Yes, you need one! According to a 2012 study by TheLadders, recruiters spend 19 percent of their time on a candidate’s LinkedIn profile looking at the picture. That seems a bit funny, but it points to how important the photo really is. If you do not have a picture up, your profile may not get any attention at all. You do not need a professional photo. Pick one you like that doesn’t have a distracting background. It’s also best not to choose one taken from so far away that you appear to be a dot on the landscape. If you can’t find a good photo, take a new one and upload it to your profile. 2. Headline.  In addition to your photo, the headline is the first thing recruiters and connections will read. You have 120 characters to craft a headline that provides a unique professional description. If you just put your current job title or “sales professional searching for new opportunities,” it’s not going to do you any favors when recruiters search for candidates. Consider what you want for the next step of your career. Search for people on LinkedIn who are in that particular field. Or  if you're looking for a role with increased responsibility in the same industry, search for  more senior people in your field. Do you see any patterns among those headlines, like common keywords? You want to construct your headline so it demonstrates exactly who you want to be next. 3. Summary.  A summary is essential to a profile and doesn’t have to be more than a few lines, although you can use up to 2,000 characters. Within that space, you should highlight your background, major accomplishments and your goals. Write it in first person and make it personal. The summary helps the recruiter get to know you beyond your résumé. Tell a brief story about why you love what you do or why you want to do something new. This is the way to stand out and make recruiters want to meet you. If you only use professional-speak and leave out your career story, recruiters may lump you with the other applicants. If you are just starting out in your career, describe what made you choose the field you’re targeting. Keywords are important to include here, too. They will help you get found by recruiters when they do general searches for candidates. 4. Publications.  While you can add links to publications, interviews and other media in your résumé, they can be cumbersome. These are much more likely to be clicked on through LinkedIn, which has a section dedicated to publications. You can insert a link there or directly in the appropriate job section, or you can simply write the name and date of the publication if no link is available. The same can be done with interviews, podcasts or videos related to your professional and volunteer work. 5. Recommendations.  Recommendations are vital to a solid LinkedIn profile. You can request a recommendation from a former colleague, client, professor or vendor easily through LinkedIn. When you do, include a brief personal note to the person asking for the recommendation instead of using the generic language LinkedIn provides. This makes it more personal and thus more likely the person will say yes. It will only take a few minutes. Just make sure you’re asking someone you worked well with. You should aim to eventually have three or more recommendations, so you may want to send out a few requests if you have the time. At any time, you can edit your profile, add to your publications field, tweak your headline or summary or change your photo. These five elements of a LinkedIn profile are significant and can have a direct effect on whether you’ll be found in a recruiter’s search or called for an interview. Your résumé might be stunning, but if you don’t have a LinkedIn profile, the recruiter may second guess that first impression. If you’ve filled out your profile and have a customized, concise résumé, you are much more likely to get called.  Marcelle Yeager  is the president of  Career Valet, which delivers personalized career navigation services. 5 Tips for Explaining Why Youre Looking for a New Job

5 Tips for Explaining Why You’re Looking for a New Job 5 Tips for Explaining Why You’re Looking for a New Job 0Job interviews can be awkward enough, but having  to explain why you’re looking for a new job  when you’re still employed can take it to a whole other level. After all, you don’t want to bad-mouth your boss or make any disparaging comments about your current position as a reason why you want to leave (even if it’s true). Of course you should always be honest during a job interview, but sitting there complaining about your boss or coworkers the whole time will not paint a great picture of who you are. Instead, you should focus on one or more of the followingso long as theyre real reasons! Here are five tips for explaining why youre looking for a new job while youre employed, without sounding like a whiner: 1. Explain that you’ve outgrown the position. In today’s day and age where people are rarely reaching retirement having worked at one company for over 30 years, it’s highly probable that the job you started off with is going to get old and stale after awhile. And unless the company you currently work for has made an effort for the position to grow and change with you, there’s a good chance that you’re going to get bored and look for something more challenging as time goes on. So it’s perfectly acceptable to state that while you’ve loved working for the company and have learned so much in your job, you feel that you’ve learned everything that you can and are looking for a job with new challenges where you can better utilize your skills and experience. 2. Discuss your desire or  need for flexible working options. Let’s say that the company you’re interviewing with has an open flexible work policy. Heck, they might be 100 percent remote and not even have a brick-and-mortar headquarters. And to be totally honest, that’s one of the main reasons why you’re attracted to working for them. But no matter what the reason is why you need workplace flexibility (e.g., you have small children, you’re a caregiver, you’re disabled and need to work remotely, you’re a military spouse, you hate commuting, etc.), it’s never a good idea to explain why you’re looking for a new job by stating that you need flex- now. Sure, it might be a given that virtually every worker wants flexible work options, but in a job interview scenario, it shouldn’t be the main reason you tout as why you want to work for the company. Instead, mention all the reasons why you would like to work for the company, and if you’re asked about the company’s flexible work policy, then you can mention how the flex can be a fit for your life without making it too personal. 3. Discuss how you  feel this new job is a better fit. Here’s the thing about job interviews- it’s not about you. Ultimately, every job is a company’s problem that needs a solution, and you, job seeker, are that answer. During your job interview with a new company, it’s a good idea to point out potential pain points that the organization might be facing, and then explain how you plan to solve them with your fresh ideas, experience, and knowledge. Then you can focus the interview on why this new job aligns better with your career goals and where you want your career path headed in the future. 4. Say you’re looking to change careersand give a good reason why. One of the easiest ways to explain why you want to leave your current position in favor of a new job is that you’ve simply changed career interests, if thats actually the case. Being a career changer isn’t necessarily a red flag to a potential employer but rather a sign that you know what works for you and what isn’t- literally. So if you are applying for a new job that is different from your former field, let your interviewer know that you are changing career paths and that working for this company would be in line with your current career goals. Then explain all of your transferable skills and experience to show that you are qualified for the job. 5.  Tell them this is your dream job or company! Employers aren’t just looking for seat warmers to fill open job positions. They want job seekers who ardently want to work for their organizations. During your job interview, make it less about the company you’re leaving and more about why the company you’re interviewing with is the perfect fit for you. Explain how you believe in their mission statement, support their humanitarian efforts, and love their company culture. All of these factors can show a potential employer that you’ve not only done your research about the company pre-interview (which is always a smart move), but that you will fit in well with the company and not leave after six months or so. Explaining why you’re looking for a new job when you already have one can trip up even the most seasoned job seeker. Be sure to focus your answers on what you can offer the company and you’ll hopefully be offered the position.

New Years Leadership Development Goals

New Year's Leadership Development Goals New Year's Leadership Development Goals December. For many leaders, it’s a time to reflect on accomplishments for the year and establish goals for the upcoming New Year.  It’s also a good time to set leadership development goals, either as part of a formal development planning process or simply because it’s a proven way to continuously improve as a leader. Leadership development goals should always be specific and relevant to you, the individual leader, and linked to your goals at the workplace, there are most likely a few common ones that most any leader could benefit from. Here’s a list to choose from. While all of them are worthy goals, it’s best to focus on the one to three. Then, once sufficient progress is made, you can always go back and select a new goal or goals. You may also find that many of the goals are related to each other, which is often the case. The key is to pick the one that seems to be at the root cause. For the Upcoming New Year, My Goals Are To: Delegate more.  My unwillingness or inability to let go is causing me to work long hours, preventing me from having the time to be more strategic, and is retarding the development of my team. I’ll do some serious self-reflection, or work with a coach or mentor, to figure out what?s?  ?causing me not to delegate.  Is it my own ego? Is it a lack of confidence in my team? Once I get to the root cause, I will create a list of everything I do and make hard decisions on what to delegate, who to delegate to, how to do it, and by when. Be more strategic.  Being more strategic will help me improve my ability to see the big picture and take a longer range, broader business perspective. I’ll learn to step back from the day-to-day tactical details of my business and focus on the “why ” not just the “what” and “how.” Be a better listener.  I need to learn to pay attention and demonstrate to others that I value what they have to say. I’ll use active listening, open-ended questions, body language, and eliminate distractions that get in the way of my ability to listen. Micromanage less  (or not at all).  No one likes to think of themselves as a micromanager, but after taking this quiz,  I realized I have room for improvement. Delegating more will help, but it will be important to give my team members the freedom to do it their way, without me breathing down their necks. Improve my financial acumen.  I need to learn how to understand, interpret, and use “the numbers” to improve my business. I’ll start by taking an Excel course, then a  â€œFinance for Non-Financial Managers” course. Take action on chronic under-performers.  I’ve been allowing one to two C-player employees to get away with under-performance for way too long. It’s affecting my organization, my own performance, the morale of the rest of my team, and I’m not doing these under-performers any favors by covering up for them. Be a better coach. For the rest of my team (the B and C-players), I need to spend more time coaching and developing them. I need to shift my leadership style away from always directing and telling and learn to guide and develop my direct reports. I’ll work with each of my direct reports to create their own  individual development plans. Improve my work-life balance.  My insanely long hours are having an impact on my performance, health, personal relationships, and I’m setting a terrible example for my employees. Delegating more will help, as well as micromanaging less â€"  practicing mindfulness in all areas of my life will help incredibly. I’ll get a handle on where I’m wasting time, and shift my focus to more value-added activities. I’ll learn ways to work more efficiently and prioritize tasks. Create my own succession plan. I’ll never get the promotion I want if I’m too indispensable in my current role. Its time to create a succession plan to not only pave my own path but a path for others. Improve collaboration. I need to  improve relationships with my peers. I’ll be a better partner, strive to understand their goals and needs, and learn to work together to help achieve each other’s goals. If one of them is underperforming or struggling, I’ll offer my help.

Army Ups Mandatory Retirement Age

Army Ups Mandatory Retirement Age Army Ups Mandatory Retirement Age The U.S. Army has raised the mandatory retirement age for active duty soldiers to age 62, from age 55. The Army also raised the maximum enlistment age to 39, from 34. That change to the maximum retirement age allows soldiers who enlist at ages above 34 to obtain 20 years of service, which is required in order for a soldier to be eligible for full retirement benefits. The Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard all set their own policies, so the maximum age for service varies slightly in each branch, and even for different ranks within a branch. For instance, for U.S. Marines the mandatory retirement age is 62, although some higher-level officers and specialized personnel can serve until age 68. The policies change frequently, too, based on military needs and budgets. For example, in 2018 some Air Force colonels were invited to stay on for three years beyond the mandatory retirement mark, which is usually 30 years of service. It also is possible to apply for a waiver of the mandatory retirement age.

How to Tell Data Entry Scams From Legitimate Jobs

How to Tell Data Entry Scams From Legitimate Jobs How to Tell Data Entry Scams From Legitimate Jobs Trying to tell data entry scams from legit data entry jobs takes careful research and common sense. Common sense tells you that low-skill jobs never pay high wages. And legit data entry salaries typically pay very little. It follows, then, that  data entry jobs  promising big money are scams.  Careful research will help you  ?locate legitimate work-at-home opportunities. Do Your Research For starters, you should do an internet search to see where the firm is located, a description of what they do, how many people they employ, when they were founded, and so on. If you dont find anything online, thats a clear signal they are not legit. If your web research turns up some information that looks sketchy, check out the company via the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Better Business Bureau (BBB) websites. If you cant find them on the SEC or BBB site, youre better off walking away. Even if the company seems legit, it pays to visit the BBB website because they list known business schemes under their Scams banner. Also, unless you recognize the name of the business, avoid any company operating outside of the U.S. If they are a scam operation, you wont have a legal leg to stand on. Red Flags That Jobs Are Scams Fraudulent data entry schemes  are  no different from other  typical work-at-home scams  such as pyramid schemes, bogus classes, fake certifications, or payment for resources available for free elsewhere. If a work-at-home data entry job asks you to pay an administrative fee or asks you to lay out money in order to receive the information you need to get started, be cautious- data entry jobs should not require you to make any kind of initial outlay. Scams will often ask for a small fee upfront to show you are serious. These are all  telltale signs of a work-at-home scam. What Data Entry Scams May Look Like One of the negatives about the internet is that you dont always know whos behind the computer. While new scams are created every day, some of the more popular ones look like the following: Affiliate marketing. Sometimes data entry scams are really affiliate marketing business opportunities. Often these are labeled nontraditional data entry. And while affiliate marketing is a legit home business, what makes these scams are the misleading advertising and promises of big earnings. Affiliate marketing is not a quick and easy way to make money. First, you have to build a website, then you have to drive traffic and generate sales. No one can sell you a legit turnkey operation to do this. Along these same lines are work-at-home opportunities that require you to post ads to online forums. These opportunities may very well be pyramid schemes because they only pay for recruitment of more people who will post more ads. Classes, business kits, training, certification, etc. Often the nontraditional data entry (or affiliate marketing) opportunities are only tutorials about affiliate marketing, which may or may not be helpful. Other data entry scams may sell classes, training, or certification that promises to help you get a job. You might also run into a situation where the company says the training is required in order to work for them. While some specialized data entry jobs, like medical or  legal transcription or medical coding, do require special training, most do not. Investigate carefully any training or certification before making any kind of commitment. Transcription jobs. Transcription is one form of data entry. Data entry scams dressed up to look like transcription jobs will often require paid training or a fee in order to get a list of employers. They could also require tests or demand administrative fees. One scam is to require applicants to take a test, which is not uncommon for legit data entry jobs,, but everyone or nearly everyone fails. Medical coding and transcription. Data entry scams that tout medical coding jobs often require that you pay for bogus certification or training. These will also sometimes offer turnkey business opportunities. If the jobs are positioned this way, they definitely are not legit. Instead, find out about legitimate medical transcription jobs for a number of reputable medical transcription businesses. Process rebates scam. The pitch in these work-at-home scams is that you make money just by filling out online forms- everything you need is provided. This is your classic bait-and-switch scam because, in reality, you have to send $150 to $200 (or more in some cases) for a program that lets you process rebates at home. At best, what you receive is information that is available for free elsewhere. At worst, you are hooked into a work-at-home scam in which you use your money to process rebates and then youre never reimbursed. Ways to Protect Yourself You can take several steps to make sure you dont fork over money to a scammer, and ensure that you get paid from a legitimate digital boss. Insist on a binding contract of employment that clearly states your hours, pay, and benefits (if any). Dont start work until both you and the employer have signed the contract. You may also want to have an employment lawyer look over your contract.Dont hand over any of your personal information (especially your Social Security and checking account numbers) until you know who youre dealing with. Scammers out there can easily steal your identity, and some scammers are in the business of selling your stats to hackers who are expert at identity theft. Dont ever trust Yelp reviews or testimonials on a companys website. Its best to ask for references and contact those people directly. Just be sure the references are on the up-and-up, and not somebodys cousin, by asking them detailed questions. If possible, speak to the person on the phone- if you do it via email, you could be corresponding with a Russian teenager who has computer access.

Headaches from Trying to Apply for Online Jobs

Headaches from Trying to Apply for Online Jobs Headaches from Trying to Apply for Online Jobs At Find My Profession, we enjoy helping clients apply for online jobs. In the process of doing this, and looking for online jobs, we come across many companies who attempt to build career sections. These career sections have places to apply for online jobs. And that is where we come across the problems below. Headache #1: Billion-dollar company...10 dollar career section We come across a LinkedIn or Indeed job posting that reads, “Apply on Company Website”. The website is run by a billion-dollar company, so we expect to see a sharp and clean application process. Not so fast. After landing on the application page, we find a text-only page straight out of 2001 that looks thrown together by a writer and web developer. Even worse than this, the links do not work or the page freezes. There are no company logos on the page and all the billion-dollar “gusto” is nowhere to be found. Solution: Read the job description and look to see if it mentions the hiring manager by name with an email. Then, reach out to the person directly and explain how you had tried to use the application form. You may also find the hiring manager on LinkedIn. Headache #2: The elusive job posting on a company website You came across the perfect opportunity when looking for online jobs. You click the link and…The job is nowhere to be found. You then do a keyword search for the job and still have no luck. But you are positive you had just seen it! Solution: It is safe to assume that the link to the job was living on another site, but the job listing was removed. It happens and when it does it is best to move on. Forget about it. The job is no longer available or was posted by mistake in the first place. Headache #3: When the application process is broken When you start looking for online jobs, the assumption may be that the application submission will be flawless. After all, talent acquisition is very important to the growth of a company! So, it may come as a surprise when you try to submit your resume and come across technical issues. The “Submit” button has no link embedded or the page jumps to a dead link. Maybe, the screen freezes. All of this can be frustrating, especially if you spent a good amount of time filling out the application form. Solution: If possible, use the company’s live chat to see if you can get support. If this does not work, try the solution from headache #1. Reaching out directly to people in charge of hiring is a great way to network, not just for one job, but for others in the future. Headache #4: Company databases not saving logins and passwords There are companies we all desire to work for. And quite often, we have to create a profile on a company database to get into their system. But when you try to apply for online jobs, the company database always seems to forget your login information. This is highly unfortunate and you would be surprised if you knew the big tech companies it happens with. They may do this for security reasons, yes, but if the login and password won’t be saved, they should just allow people to submit resumes. Solution: It is hard to tell some days if companies are actually trying to test job candidates with their application processes. If there appears to not be a terrible amount of resources invested in the talent acquisition tool, go around it. Try to find someone on LinkedIn to connect with. Of course, as frustrating as it may be, you can just fill out a new company profile every time you visit the website. Headache #5: Fake job postings You see a job you want and click the proper link to apply. The next thing you know, you are taken to a page asking you to fill out a profile. Only this profile is for a job listing website. The job you thought you were applying to does not exist, but the info was used to attract new profile creations from job candidates. This is as much a buzzkill as it is a headache for those trying to apply for online jobs. Solution: The best thing to do is back out and not fill out the profile. Unless you want to receive spam and job alerts from new websites you have no interest in. Better yet, you can skip this headache and get people to apply for you much like the services at Find My Profession.

What you should know about applying for jobs this holiday season

What you should know about applying for jobs this holiday season What you should know about applying for jobs this holiday season It’s that time of year when seasons begin to change, and a lot of people start pondering their jobs: “Is my current role a good fit for me?” “Is it time to search for something new?” Regardless of your employment status or what you’re considering for your next career move, here are a few things you should you know applying for jobs this season.Keep in Mind that Hiring Patterns are Industry SpecificGenerally, hiring will slow down during the holidays, however keep in mind that industries vary based on their peak season. For example, January through April is peak season for tax and accounting professionals, so a lot of firms want to hire employees before the end of the year so they can onboard and train them before busy season starts.Retail companies also hire a lot of employees during the holiday time. (Target is expected hire 120,000 workers this holiday season, up 20% from 2017.) Most of the time these are seasonal roles, but you can use this to your benefit. While retai l might not be part of your career goals, if you’re strapped for cash, taking on a seasonal role can be a great way to make some extra money while still maintaining a career focused job search.Research your target industry and approach potential employers accordingly. Industries who thrive in the new year (i.e. health, wellness, nutrition, etc.) will likely hire employees during holiday months to prepare for the January boom. Additionally, if an employee is planning to make a career move, it’s possible that they will leave one company before the holidays and negotiate the start date for their new role in the new year to gain some needed rest. If this is the case, there will be an opening during the holiday season that the company will likely want to fill. This could be your opportunity to land a job quickly.Continue Applying for Jobs Through the “Slow” Period“Don’t stop applying between Thanksgiving and the New Year. Since many job seekers take this time off, assuming th at no one is hiring, you’ll likely be in a smaller pool of candidates and can more easily stand out,” says career coach, Alyson Garrido. Many job seekers simply take the holidays off because they don’t think it’s worth it, so use this to your advantage. If others are being lazy about their job search, use that to motivate you. Employers will likely notice and appreciate your drive, which will work in your favor.Be Mindful of the Time of YearYes, you should absolutely keep applying to jobs throughout the holiday season, but be mindful that the holidays are a time to spend with the people you love. Don’t expect to hear back from anyone on actual holidays, and keep in mind that most offices are closed the day after thanksgiving and potentially Christmas Eve/the day after Christmas. Don’t send email after email asking for a response. Applying to jobs during November and December is one thing, but pestering a potential employer or industry contact about a job opportunity is so mething different.Spread Holiday CheerWhen it comes to networking, sending a holiday message is a great way to connect with others without having to immediately reach out to discuss employment opportunities. Alyson Garrido goes on to say, “Send year-end notes wishing your contacts a joyous holiday season or happy new year. It’s an easy way to keep in touch and stay on your contacts’ radar without asking scheduling a coffee or asking a question. Simple, personalized notes make a lasting impression.”This article was originally posted on CreateandCultivate.
